Buying Food..
- Farmers' Market - Edinburgh
Location: Castle Terrace.
Every fortnight (first and third Saturday of every month) the city's farmers' market sets up its stalls under the castle. This is one of the biggest in Scotland with around 40 traders. Here you will find everything from Highland beef, wild boar, organic eggs, beer, juice and veg, fresh shellfish, and the life-saver on a winter's day - hot 'hog roast' rolls.
- The Cutty Sark
Location: 26 Victoria Street.
Tea and coffee haven with jars of loose tea and coffee in copious varieties. Look out for the fiendishly expensive Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and Jamaican and African teas.
- Eddie's Seafood Market
Location: Southside.
Supplier to many of Edinburgh's best restaurants, the place overflows with sealife: lobsters and langoustines meander around a large tank while exotic sea creatures, including air-freighted delicacies such as Brazilian snapper, spill from boxes on the floor. Scotland's waters provide most of the fish, however, with shell-fish high on the list.
- IJ Mellis Cheesemonger
Location: Victoria Street.
There are 3 Mellis shops in the city centre offering fully matured fresh farmhouse chesses. With years of knowledge, Iain Mellis knows exactly what makes a good cheese and only selects the best British and European cheeses. He even has a hand in ripening them in his maturing rooms. The shops have a Dickensian feel where aroma is high on the list of sensual delights.
- Royal Mile Whiskies
Location: Royal Mile.
Attracting serious whisky drinkers from around the world, this shop sells around 1000 malt whiskies and bourbons from around Scotland, Ireland and further afield, some of them dating back to 1897.
- Grassmarket Stores
Location: Grassmarket Square.
Convenience store where you will be able to buy basics such as milk, newspapers, etc.
- Sainsbury's Local
Location: Morrison Street.
Convenience store for purchasing basics.
- Jenners
Location: Princes Street.
One of Edinburgh's oldest and best loved department stores with food hall on the top.
- Mark's and Spencers
Location: Princes Street (just along from Jenners).
Food Hall in the basement.
